Dr. Kenneth S. Kornman Named Journal of Periodontology Editor-in-Chief

Dr. Kornman brings considerable experience to the position as an author, reviewer, and editor.

Kenneth KornmanCHICAGO–October 1, 2006—Dr. Kenneth S. Kornman has begun his tenure as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Periodontology (JOP). Dr. Kornman was approved by the AAP Board of Trustees last May as the successor to Dr. Robert J. Genco, who concluded 18 years of service as editor in September and was named JOP editor emeritus.

Dr. Kornman brings considerable experience to the position as an author, reviewer, and editor. In addition to all of the top periodontal and implant journals, he has published in a broad range of other peer-reviewed publications, including Science, New England Journal of Medicine, Genomics, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Physiology, Human Molecular Genetics, and Infection and Immunity. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Periodontology, the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine, and the Journal of Periodontal Research. He also has been an ad hoc reviewer for Infection and Immunity, Cytokine, JADA, and European Cytokine Network, and has edited four textbooks. Perhaps most notable of his editorial achievements is his co-editing of an issue of Periodontology 2000 on the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. He also co-edited the proceedings from the Academy’s landmark 1989 World Workshop in Periodontics. Dr. Kornman was a member of the search committee that selected Dr. Genco 18 years ago, and he has worked cooperatively with Dr. Genco as a participant on JOP’s Advisory Board since its inception.

Dr. Kornman completed his dental degree at Emory University and received an MS in periodontics and a PhD in microbiology from the University of Michigan. He has served on the faculty of the University of Connecticut and is a former chair of the Periodontics Department at the University of Texas, San Antonio. He currently holds a position as chief scientific officer at Interleukin Genetics in Waltham, Massachussetts. Dr. Kornman presented an impressive and ambitious vision for the Journal of Periodontology that was embraced by the Search Committee and the Board.

Dr. Kornman has prepared for his new position by naming associate editors, an editorial advisory board, and a peer review panel. He plans to build upon the successes of his predecessors, maintaining the Journal’s position as the leading publication in the field, while increasing its relevance to the clinician and expanding its influence worldwide.

“It is an honor for me to serve the Academy in this important way,” commented Dr. Kornman. “I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Journal’s continued success, and I am committed to helping it meet the challenges it faces in the future.”

About the AAP

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the professional organization for periodontists—specialists in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also dentistry’s experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. They receive three additional years of specialized training following dental school, and periodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. The AAP has 8,400 members worldwide.

Find out if you are at risk for periodontal diseases by taking the Academy’s risk assessment test. Referral to a periodontist in your area is available by calling 800-FLOSS-EM or visiting the AAP's website at www.perio.org.
